Engineering remains one of the highest-paying professions in America. Across all disciplines, the median engineering salary has climbed past $100,000 for the first time in history. But within that number lies enormous variation — a petroleum engineer in Houston can earn twice what a civil engineer makes in a mid-size Midwest city.
This guide presents salary data based on thousands of placements made through EngineeringRecruiters.com, supplemented by Bureau of Labor Statistics data and our proprietary market surveys. We cover base salary, total compensation trends, and the factors that most influence what an engineer can earn.
Software engineering continues to command the highest average salaries among engineering disciplines. The median base salary is $142,000, but total compensation at major tech companies (including equity, bonuses, and benefits) frequently pushes total pay to $200,000-$400,000 for senior engineers.
Key factors: AI/ML specialization commands a 20-35% premium. Full-stack engineers earn 10% more than front-end or back-end specialists. Cloud/infrastructure engineers are closing the gap with application developers. Remote-eligible roles typically pay 5-10% less than equivalent on-site positions in major metros.
Hot specialties: AI/ML Engineering ($150K-$200K+), Platform Engineering ($130K-$175K), Security Engineering ($125K-$170K)
Despite the energy transition narrative, petroleum engineers remain among the highest-paid. The median salary is $135,000, driven by strong demand from oil & gas companies and the energy transition itself (many petroleum engineers are pivoting to geothermal, carbon capture, and hydrogen).
Geographic premium: Houston pays a 15-20% premium for petroleum engineers. Permian Basin roles offer hardship premiums of 10-15% above Houston rates.
The new space economy has lifted aerospace salaries significantly. The median salary is $118,000, with propulsion, avionics, and spacecraft systems engineers at the top of the range. Defense-sector roles with active security clearances pay 10-20% premiums.
Top markets: Los Angeles (SpaceX, JPL, Northrop Grumman), Huntsville (NASA Marshall, defense), Seattle (Boeing, Blue Origin), Denver (Lockheed Martin, Ball Aerospace)
Chemical engineering salaries average $112,000. Pharmaceutical process engineers and semiconductor chemical engineers earn at the top of the range. Clean energy and battery chemistry roles are growing rapidly.
Growth areas: Battery materials ($100K-$140K), Pharmaceutical manufacturing ($95K-$135K), Semiconductor process ($100K-$140K)
The median electrical engineering salary is $108,000. Power electronics engineers (critical for EVs and grid modernization) and semiconductor design engineers command significant premiums.
Premium specialties: Semiconductor design ($110K-$160K), Power electronics ($100K-$145K), RF/Microwave ($95K-$140K)
Top markets: Silicon Valley, Phoenix (Intel, TSMC), Portland (Intel), Dallas-Fort Worth (Texas Instruments)
As the broadest engineering discipline, mechanical engineering salaries span a wide range with a median of $98,000. Specialization is the key to higher earnings — thermal management, robotics, and EV powertrain engineers earn well above the median.
Premium specialties: Robotics ($95K-$140K), EV Powertrain ($90K-$135K), Thermal Management ($88K-$130K)
Top markets: Detroit (automotive), Boston (robotics), Chicago (manufacturing)
Biomedical engineering salaries average $102,000, with medical device design and regulatory affairs specialists at the top. The medtech hub of Minneapolis (Medtronic, Boston Scientific) is the premier market.
Growth areas: Digital health ($90K-$135K), Medical robotics ($95K-$140K), Implantable devices ($88K-$125K)
Industrial engineering salaries average $96,000. Supply chain and logistics engineers have seen the largest salary increases since 2020, driven by reshoring and automation. Lean/Six Sigma certifications add 8-12% to base salary.
Civil engineering has the lowest average salary ($92,000) among major disciplines but offers excellent stability and growth. The infrastructure bill has pushed structural and transportation engineer salaries up 15-20% since 2022. PE licensure adds a 10-15% salary premium.
Hot specialties: Structural ($80K-$120K), Transportation ($78K-$115K), Water/Wastewater ($75K-$110K)
Where you work dramatically affects your engineering salary. Here are the key geographic premiums and discounts:
New graduates with a BS in engineering can expect starting salaries of $65,000-$95,000 depending on discipline and location. Software engineering starts highest, while civil engineering starts lowest. Co-op and internship experience can add $5,000-$10,000 to starting offers.
Engineers with 4-9 years experience typically earn $90,000-$140,000. This is the steepest growth period — engineers who develop specializations or earn professional certifications (PE, PMP, Six Sigma Black Belt) see the largest jumps. Moving to a high-demand specialty can increase salary by 20-30%.
Senior engineers earn $120,000-$175,000 in base salary. At this level, the IC (individual contributor) vs. management split becomes critical. Technical leads and principal engineers can match or exceed engineering manager compensation without the management burden.
VP of Engineering, Chief Engineer, and Distinguished Engineer roles command $160,000-$250,000+ in base salary. Total compensation with equity can exceed $400,000-$600,000 at large tech companies.
Beyond base salary, engineering compensation packages in 2026 commonly include:
